Mantigue Island, Camiguin

The “Island Born of Fire,” that’s what Camiguin is known for. The second smallest province in the Philippines, this island is located north of Mindanao and is home to seven volcanoes – much of the island was formed through earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

While I find the island mystical and may not be as touristy as Siargao or Siquijor, Camiguin offers its visitors a lot to explore – ruins, waterfalls, snorkeling, diving, breathtaking sunset, fruits, black sand beaches and white sand islets.

As for white sand beaches, here’s one to tick off your list: Mantigue Island, located in Mahinog, 3.5km off the east coast of Camiguin Island. This islet is a protected marine sanctuary so you can snorkel all you want or just walk around the island which may take you around 20 minutes or so. Bring with you your sunblock, the pristine torquoise water is too tempting to resist. Since this island is one of the popular destinations in Camiguin, local eateries abound so there’s no need to worry, you won’t get hungry after your swim. You can also rent cottages where you can stay and rest for P150.

I found a spot in the islet where I could be alone and it was easy to get lost in the beauty of Mantigue.

HOW TO GO TO MANTIGUE ISLAND:

  1. Your starting point should be in Mambajao, the center of Camiguin, then make your way to San Roque Port. You can rent a scooter there for P350/day. You can opt to rent a tricycle (P150-200) or shared van (P40)
  2. At San Roque Port, book your Mantigue Island tour at the  tourist office. Boat rental is P600 (max of 6 pax) for the whole day so it’s cheaper to find companions.
  3. You also need to pay Environmental Fee: P30

Mantigue Island snorkeling fee: 50 pesos
Rent a mask and snorkel: 100 pesos
